Building Tips To Follow When Constructing Long Lasting Buildings

0

The media has been recently flooded with stories of buildings collapsing in city centers and other areas. A few weeks ago we witnessed a tragic incidence when a building collapsed in Makerere injuring and killing a number of people and another collapsed in Kenya leading to the loss of lives.

If cheap materials, inexperienced engineers and poor architectural structures are used during the construction process the structure will eventually collapse. Shakib Nsubuga, Country Manager of Lamudi in Uganda, said: “ Most of these buildings collapse because the proper channels are not followed and proper materials are rarely used. It is important that more stringent measures are put in place in order to maintain buildings that are up to standards.”

This week we share with you tips to follow when constructing long lasting buildings.

Use the right material in the right way

Most building materials are only strong and long lasting if they are used in the right way. While wood is a good material to use when constructing a roof of a building it is not necessarily advisable to use it as window frames. When designing a building it is important that you use the right materials in the right area in order to prevent the property collapsing or failing to stay in place when faced with climates and catastrophes.

Use Professionals when constructing/building

It is important to use the right professionals for the right areas when building or constructing a building. Most people in Kampala claim to be “a jack of all trades” whereby a plumber will claim to know what a painter and electrician do and dupe you into to paying for half hazard and unsafe connections. Do not risk to higher one person to do all the work because you think this will save you money because in the run this mistake will cost you more money and possibly lives.

What materials to use

Over time materials have adapted with the need for man to create long lasting structures to withstand the constantly changing climate and environment. For example in Dubai man has now created structures that can be built on water bodies and sand something that was not possible in the beginning. Some of the materials to use are:

  • Concrete because if used in the right way it can be disaster resistant. In cases of fire, earthquakes, tornados e.t.c concrete is very resistant.
  • Bricks have always been the tradition building material. If used right bricks can produce a long lasting structure. Apart from being affordable they have a hard consistency that is good for buildings.
  • Stone is a very reliable raw building material this is because it resists deforming, weathers and helps maintain stable interior environments.
  • Iron and Steel, these materials are important when building skyscrapers, tall buildings put a lot of weight on a load bearing walls hence the iron and steel help with keeping them upright.

Shelter is a basic need and therefore when it comes to creating shelter it is important that we pay attention to every small detail.

Tips For Traveling With Children

0

Traveling with children is always very interesting, you will either enjoy it or be neurotic and end up missing the fun. Here are a number of tips some of our parents on how they handle traveling with their children.

Planning

Always have a well planned list on you that you will use whenever the time to travel arises. It’s even better when you have it saved on your computer or phone and edit it for the different trips then print it. This list helps you remember what you need for the event, what will not be necessary on the new trip and of course what children will need. It helps you stay organized and not lose your mind.

Medication

This is quite important that always makes sure you carry all the necessary medicine for you children especially if you are going to a rural area, away from pharmacies and hospitals. Children are usually allergic to several different forms of medication so carrying the ones you are used with an emergency kit will be very useful even if you went to have fun.

Hotel Booking

With the emergence of technology, you do not have to wait when you arrive at the hotel to confirm your bookings. You can use sites like Jovago.com to make your reservations and the travel advisor will confirm the booking for you to take one load off of your plate as you plan for your travels. Make sure to get hotels that are suitable for children with planned activities and play areas for them.

Packing

If you have teenagers, it is better you let them pack their own holiday outfits and after they are done you double check just to make sure everything is weather appropriate for the destination. Just in case you are going to fly, separate all the luggage in different bags because at times the airlines lose bags and you do not want to be stranded in another country wearing only your travel clothes as you wait.

Kid Time

When you get to your destination, do not just plan activites that only suit adults; plan for children too. Keep them busy and help them learn about their new surroundings, children love seeing new things and this helps them make new memories along the way. They will make friends easily when they meet other children in a child friendly environment on their vacation.

Toys

For the little one and those in the terrible two stage, carry toys for them to keep them busy on the journey to your vacation, Children do not like being in one place for long that is why they become fussy and irritable. The toys help them focus on something else other than the fact they are cooped up in one place for hours.

Forget The Rules

Its vacation after all, why do you have to tell the kids to maintain their bed and dinner time? Let them have fun because it helps you to enjoy too, break the rules for the length of the vacation. Supervise them, but do not be in their faces every time especially the teenagers, they resent that and end up being more rebellious. You do not want to have a rebellious teen fueled by hormones driving you nuts on your vacation.

Mummy and Daddytime

Do not forget why you went for the vacation in the first place, to relax and get away from everything. So stop worrying about children or the planning of other activities for the vacation, ask the hotel if they can get you a babysitter or have your older kids babysit for you and go enjoy yourself. Use the times you take the kids for sightseeing and enjoy it, live in the moment and create memories with the children

Interviews: Don’t Freak Out When You Are Asked These Questions

0

Ever been in an interview and you are asked a simple casual question; you have no idea how to perfectly answer it, you try to gamble but your tongue can’t move. Your brain freezes and you start sweating. It is not a fun moment. It’s like watching your hope crumble to pieces right in front of you.

For instance, there’s this common question – Tell me about yourself?

For starters, no one is going to write a book about you at that moment. This is not a session for your biography. This is an interview. What do you say, what do you leave out? Tricky.

See, when you start narrating how you grew up in some town, went to this and that school, met some beautiful girl that is now your girlfriend … and you look at the interviewer’s smiles and you are convinced that he or she is taking in every word you’re saying, my friend, the interviewer could be far away in his or her own mind. Why? Most times, the more you talk about yourself, the less interesting you become. They can even zone out 5 seconds into the story, but you’ll see a smile on their face. Yet they are so far away, probably thinking about a certain meeting they scheduled for later in the day.

You ask; “why would they ask me such a question if they are not interested in my story”? … Because it’s in the script! They probably don’t really care about your career story, but they have a list of questions to ask interviewees and this question happens to be one of them.

So what do you do to get their interest? Become relevant. Until you make yourself relevant to him or her, it’s impossible for your interviewer to care about you. That’s how the human brain works.

When this question pops up, look at this moment as an opportunity for you to take control of the interview and position yourself as the perfect candidate for the job.

There are two reasons why hiring managers will ask this question:

  1. They want to see how you react to a question asked casually and without structure. They want to throw you off your game and break you free from the memorized answers.
  2. They want to get a feel for what you deem to be “important”. They are trying to get a sense of whether or not you truly understand which experiences, skills and abilities are relevant for the position you are interviewing for.

So please don’t respond with an ‘audio format’ of your CV or your life story. Don’t ask; “uh … What do you want to know?” Don’t go there.

Keep in mind, this is not about you, it’s about them. Focus on what interests your interviewer. Keep it short … a minute … 90 seconds at most.

90 seconds? Yes. Take this example;

You are seeking to work as a system analyst. The interviewer goes; tell me about yourself?

You say; I’ve been working for the past seven years as a systems analyst and data manager. During that time, I’ve been trained and certified on a number of different software platforms and systems.

Done!

Let’s say you passed that test and they go ahead and ask – Why should I hire you?

Some people will say – ‘because I need a job and you need an employee’. (So obvious, right?) Others will say – ‘because am suitable for the job and you need me’. Another person could literally narrate an ‘encyclopedia’ of themselves in that moment. No interviewer has time to listen to an entire ‘encyclopedia’ during an interview.

How do you nail this question then?

First and foremost, have the job description by heart. Don’t be in a state where you have no idea about the skills required for that job. If the advertising company/employer did not point out the job description in their advert, feel free to ask for it during the interview. No one will arrest you for asking.

Then, explain your skills/experience. If you want to be a system analyst, don’t tell them how good you can cook ‘luwombo’ nooo. Explain how you have the required experience/skill-sets to do that particular job. Stay relevant. If you have data and samples to back your claims, perfect. Present this information. (It acts as your ‘affidavit’).

Next, explain why you’re a good fit. Usually, there are more people in queue craving for that position. Keep in mind most employers would want people who know the space, the product and the teams. Take time to relate things you’ve done in the past to what the company expects you to do. It’s also important to explain how you believe in the values of the company at a personal level.

Another thing; show how you get stuff done. This is the most critical ability every employer is looking for; the ability to get things done, no matter what is an indispensable quality, and offer examples of how you’ve done that in the past.

Facts About Elephants You Need to Know

0

The African elephant is the largest existing land animal in the world, which makes them very easy to sight in the many animal reserves and national parks  that they can be found. In Uganda, you will find several of these elephants in National parks such as Semuliki, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi.

Elephants are amazing creatures and these are some of the known facts about them.

Savannah and Forest Elephants:

In Uganda, you will find two types of elephants in the wild; even if the distinction is not quite obvious till you move close enough to look at them. Savannah elephants are slightly larger than their forest counterparts and on the other hand the latter are usually grey in color and live mostly in the jungles and forests such as the Bwindi impenetrable forests.

Intelligence:

Elephants are known to have a high intellectual quotient almost close that of  human beings, making them one of the most intelligent animal species in the world. Their brain is believed to be formed in the same way as that of a human, with over a total of 300 billion neurons and general connectivity.

The elephant brain is also big in size compared to other animals even though the Asian elephant is believed to be more intelligent than the African one.

Life Span:

African elephants can live up to 80 years especially when not in captivity compared to their Asian cousins whose lifespan is estimated to be 48 years of age.

Gestation Period:

Of all mammals, Elephants have the longest gestation period of approximately 22 months.  The long developmental period allows the fetus to mature and once the calf ) is born, it stands and starts walking on its own. Just like humans, Elephants raise their young and a new calf is always at the center of the herd to avoid attacks. The calves are fed on milk for the first few months and in the absence of its  mother, the calf is adopted and raised by the other cows (female elephants).

Feeding:

Elephants are herbivorous animals and feed according to their different locations. In Uganda; the forest and savannah Elephants feed on leaves and grass close to their habitats. They use their trunks and tusks to forage for food.

Family:

Elephants especially females live among their families compared to the males. They move in herds led by the oldest female known as a matriarch who provides direction and decision for the young herd members. Once the matriarch dies, she is succeeded by her eldest daughter to lead the group. The bulls (male elephants) usually separate from their families when they hit puberty and tend to live with other bulls or live alone and can only move when looking for a mate.

Emotions:

The elephant species displays some similar emotional traits as those of human beings. They are known to show compassion and empathy to others especially in situations where one of them is ailing. They take care of their old by feeding them and usually bury their dead by digging a hole and covering it with leaves or mud.

Ears:

Their huge ears are a huge distinctive body part that is usually used to differentiate an African elephant from an Asian one. Asian elephants have small ears while the African elephants have big ears,  which they use to fan out the savannah heat. The ears contain blood veins known as capillaries that transport blood through the ear and helps release excess body heat out of the body, by flapping.

Tusks and Trunk;

Elephant’s tusks are a huge part of their life and you will find that as humans, some elephants are either left tusked or right tusked depending on what tusk they use the most. You cannot remove an elephant’s tusk without bringing harm to it, since they usually contain veins that go up to their skulls.

The trunk is a boneless long muscle that serves as both an upper lip and nose for the animal. They are used for several things including; breathing, feeding and touching other elephants to show emotions plus vocal communication.

Elephants are some of the most endangered animals in Uganda and the whole of East Africa, due to the rise in illegal ivory trade carried in the National Parks.

The Real Truth Behind Cancer that You Need to Know

0

The real cause of cancer has been found long ago, by the Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Otto Warburg. Namely, he has discovered that the major reason for the incidence of all cancer types is, in fact, oxygen insufficiency.

This means that if the body lacks oxygen, the organism will become acidic and this will speed up the development of cancer.

Moreover, Dr. Warburg also claimed that cancer cells are anaerobic, meaning that they cannot survive in an alkaline environment (high in oxygen). Namely, without any exceptions,

“All normal cells have an absolute requirement for oxygen, but cancer cells can live without oxygen. Deprive a cell 35% of its oxygen for 48 hours and it may become cancerous.”

What we can do to maintain the balance of our pH levels is to consume a healthy and balanced diet. pH balance is the balance of acid and alkaline cells and fluids in the organism. Our body needs to maintain the pH levels in the blood at an alkaline level of 7.365 in order to survive.

However, modern living has made all of us, especially Americans, eat dangerous, toxic, unhealthy, and acid-forming products, including processed sugars, refined grains, GMOs, and the like. These unhealthy eating habits cause detrimental acidic pH levels.

In the case of an imbalance of the pH levels, there will be an interruption of the cellular functions and activities in the body.

Moreover, it the levels of the pH slope to the acidic side, they will lead t numerous health issues, ailments, and diseases, from heartburn and osteoporosis to diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Furthermore, if this state of the body lasts for a longer period of time, it will accelerate the aging process as well.

In his book “The pH Miracle”, Robert O. Young also claims that the main culprit for the incidence of numerous diseases is, in fact, the acidic state of the body.

Namely, all kinds of dangerous organisms that destroy our health, such as bad bacteria, viruses, parasites, or Candida survive and multiply in an acidic state, but cannot thrive in an alkaline environment.

Therefore, in order to prevent health issues and preserve your health, you need to take some measures and maintain the alkaline state of your body and the balance of pH levels.

Today, we will offer you a fantastic natural remedy for acidity that will help you eliminate all health threats:

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1/3 teaspoon baking soda

Method of preparation:

You need to mix the ingredients until the mixture begins to fizz. Keep adding baking soda until the fizzing stops. Next, pour the mixture into a glass of water. (8oz.)

Use:

Drink the prepared remedy all at once. You will immediately feel its beneficial effect, especially in the case of a stomach acid or acidosis.

This incredibly effective natural remedy will create an alkaline state of your body by neutralization of the pH levels, and will thus help you prevent all kinds of diseases, including cancer.

Different Types Of Home Appliance Insurance

0

When moving into your new home or purchasing new home appliances one does not foresee the damages that may occur to these expensive appliances during these transitions or in the long run.

However with home appliance insurance these damages are always taken of which takes the worry and stress of replacing your appliances in case of damages. With this post we explore different types of home appliance insurance policies that will help you out in these unforeseen scenarios. There are many appliance insurance plans such as manufacturer home warranty, seller’s warranty, extended warranty, manufacturer warranty, appliance service contract and many more. However all the insurance policies that I have listed above are all insurance policies for your household appliances. All these policies are slightly different but do not worry I explain them further below.

Home Warranty

Home warranty is a popular insurance plan for most people who want to insure their house hold appliances because it covers repairs and maintenance of household machinery. The home warranty plan takes care of repairs and replaces all your damaged but insured appliances by the service provider. However this plan is also known as Appliance Protection Plan, Appliance Service Contract, Home Maintenance Plan, Home Protection Plan, Home Appliance Insurance and Appliance Repair Service.Despite them having different names they all offer the same plan as Home warranty.

Manufacturer’s Warranty

When buying or purchasing a gadget/appliance the consumer often check out the warranty of the gadget/appliance that they are buying. Checking the warranty is important because this is an assurance provided by the manufacturer for the product and if the item does not meet the expectations promised to the consumer then the insurance provider is bound to repair or replace the product within the stated warranty period. The standard coverage is generally for the period of one year. This warranty is very important because it is legal binding, which means if the seller does not stick to their words, then you can legally file lawsuits against them.Luckily even when you purchase a gadget or appliance most online stores and offline stores are providing manufacturer’s warranty along with the purchased product. Even when products are shipped they are also completely sealed and are as good as what you can get from retail stores. Extending the warranty for additional years is possible, however it is not necessary.

Seller’s Warranty

Seller Warranty is always provided by the seller or the dealer of the gadgets or appliances are purchased from. Most of seller warranties last for the period of 6 months. In case of any sort of defect or malfunction of the product, you have to take the product particularly to the seller from whom you bought it.

Extended Warranty

This warranty can often be used when the manufactures warranty expires. However this is only recommended for those appliances that are not covered by home warranty, such as laptop, PC, TV and other electronics. An extension of the home warranty policy is also available when your original plan expires which makes it convenient. However please note that most often the breakdown period of appliances starts just before or after your warranty expires.

Home Service Contracts

These are also considered as insurance policies for home appliances. Most often these contracts are offered by vendors selling the appliances or gadgets the service company, and the third party service provider. Home service contractors are basically a local, licensed, and insured team that provides the same service as insurance companies. The price, terms and coverage choices widely vary as these companies tend to be local service providers.

Finally before buying insurance policies for your appliances make sure that you understand the “Terms and Conditions” of the policy, especially its limitations because these are very important.Make sure you know the selling agent and make sure it is from a reputable service provider in order to avoid cons. And always remember there is no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to buying insurance policies for your appliances actually asking questions will keep you way from unexpected surprises and you will know how exactly that policy benefits you as an individual.

Briefly, weight loss should be a composition of 3 factors; Life Style, Diet and Exercise implicating one has to live a sound life style, exercise regularly and check on their diet if they are to successfully lose weight.

Karen Rider of News Max lists down some of the 8 foods you should avoid eating if you are to

1. Cream Soups

While broth-based soups can be helpful during a diet, WebMD said to be careful with certain hearty soups. These soups can be very high in fat.

WebMD also recommended watching your coffee while trying to lose weight. That daily cup of joe is fat free and calorie free when it is black, but if you doctor it up, coffee can be a quick diet buster.

4. Sugary Drinks

Fruit juice may seem like a healthy option, but those drinks are loaded with sugar and calories. Many fruit juices also contain added high fructose corn syrup to make them sweeter. Medline Plus said it is better to eat a piece of fruit rather than drink juice.

5. “Low-Fat” Branded Foods

It is not the fact that the food is “low-fat,” but rather the choices people eating it are making. The Journal of Marketing Research published a study that revealed people who switch to the low-fat labeled version of foods were more likely to over-eat that food.

6. Cheese

Medline Plus listed full-fat cheese as a “worst offender” for people trying to lose weight. These cheeses pack a lot of fat.

You may already be sure to avoid doughnuts, but Medline Plus said anything with high fats, lots of sugar and refined grains are big problems for people trying to lose weight. This includes muffins, scones, cakes and brownies.

Pick the whole wheat option instead. It will have more fiber and leave you feeling full longer. This advice also covers pastas and white rice. While the whole versions of these starches can be a good part of your diet, the refined versions are less nutritious. Authority Nutrition also said they can cause your blood sugar to spike and make you want to eat more than you should. It can even make your blood sugar go up faster than eating a candy bar.

7 Reasons Why You Should Eat Plenty of Eggs

0

53.5 million pounds of guacamole were eaten during the last Super Bowl. This is a staggering amount of guacamole – enough to fill a football field 20 feet deep! This popular party dip consists primarily of avocado, a fruit that is unmatched in nutritional value and healthy fats. Enjoying an avocado a day yields remarkable health benefits, and there are plenty of fantastic recipes so you will never get bored.

Let’s take a look at some of the nutritional facts of avocados (per 3.5 oz serving):

Vitamin B6 – 13% RDA
Vitamin C – 17% RDA
Vitamin E – 10% RDA
Vitamin K – 26% RDA
Folate – 20% RDA
Potassium – 14% RDA (more than a banana!)

A 3.5 oz. serving of avocado contains 160 calories, 2 grams of protein, 15 grams of heart healthy fats and 7 grams of fiber. By numbers alone, it’s apparent that this nutritional powerhouse packs a punch. Besides the number-crunching, here are four reasons you should be eating an avocado a day:

ROBUST ANTIOXIDANT PROFILE
Avocados provide the body with over 20 vitamins and minerals on their own, but they do far more than that! With the highest lipophilic profile among all other fruits and vegetables, avocados help the body absorb and utilize fat soluble nutrients. This can enhance the nutritional value of certain nutrients by as much as 15 times.

Known as the body’s master antioxidant, glutathione (GSH) is arguably the most beneficial antioxidant in the body. Found in every living cell and produced naturally by the body, glutathione plays a key role in our immune function and cellular health. Avocados are one of the few foods that provide the body with glutathione, improving our health and immunity.

AVOCADOS FOR WEIGHT LOSS
Don’t let the high fat content and rich buttery texture of avocado fool you. This miracle fruit will actually enhance weight loss efforts, providing the body with healthy Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids that help to boost fat metabolism and yield numerous cognitive health benefits.

The high fiber and fat content of avocados help people feel fuller longer, leading to less snacking between meals without feeling deprived.

AVOCADOS AND CHOLESTEROL LEVELS
Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and improving cholesterol levels can help safeguard you from developing this fatal cardiac ailment. One way to help improve cholesterol levels is to eat more avocados.

Avocados have been proven to help reduce LDL cholesterol levels, also known as the “bad cholesterol” while improving HDL cholesterol levels or “the good cholesterol.” They can also reduce triglyceride levels, a profoundly beneficial characteristic of the avocado.

Improved cholesterol levels and reduced triglycerides can benefit a huge array of bodily systems and function. Especially important for individuals with diabetes. An avocado a day can help diabetics keep their blood glucose levels in check and avoid glycemic spikes.

NUTRITIOUS AND DELICIOUS
These are just a few of the health benefits you could enjoy from eating avocados regularly. Not to mention the great flavor profile and unique texture they can add to any number of your favorite recipes. Try adding avocado to your favorite smoothie or salad; it can even substitute butter in certain baked goods! Truly one of the most diverse and healthy foods we could all use more of in our diet.

FUN AVOCADO FACTS:
● Avocados are a fruit, not a vegetable.
● Mexico is the biggest producer of avocados globally, responsible for about one third of all avocado cultivation.
● Avocados have the highest protein content of any fruit.
● They are cholesterol-free.
● One avocado tree can produce up to 500 avocados each year.
● 75% of the fat found in avocados is unsaturated.
● The avocado is also known as the “alligator pear.”
