Empress, real names Joy Tumusiime, was born on the 5th of November 1988. She is a versatile dancehall singer who is blessed with great vocals and a hardcore (ragamuffin) dancehall style that has previously only been done by men. And she attests to this.
“As long as it is dancehall, I’m ready to take on even the men. Anyone who doubts me is invited for a freestyle battle. “Empress nuh stress to impress,” she says in reference to her adopted dictum, which means that what she does comes naturally. Empress was inspired by American rapper Eve who she says was brave enough to take on rap, a male dominated music genre and rose all the way to the top. She looks up to Jamaican female artistes like Cecile and Lady Saw whose influence can be felt in her unique blend of Ugandan dancehall that she does in a mixture of Luganda, English and Jamaican Patois. |
